The Malta national football team returned to work yesterday, holding their first training session of 2026 as preparations intensify for the crucial UEFA Nations League Play-Off against Luxembourg.

Under the guidance of head coach Emilio De Leo, the squad gathered at the National Stadium, Ta’ Qali, focusing on tactical drills and team cohesion ahead of the two-legged encounter that could see Malta achieve promotion to League C for the first time in its history.

Speaking ahead of the session, De Leo emphasised the importance of focus and unity, highlighting the historic opportunity that lies ahead for the national side. “Every player knows what’s at stake,” he said. “Our objective is clear: we want to give our fans a reason to celebrate and make Maltese football proud.”

The first leg of the play-off is set for Thursday, 26th March at 18:00 at the Ta’ Qali National Stadium, with the return leg scheduled for Tuesday, 31st March at the Stade de Luxembourg. Malta will be aiming to build on home advantage before travelling to Luxembourg for the decisive second leg.

Fans will be eagerly following the team’s preparations over the coming days as Malta readies itself for a historic campaign under De Leo’s leadership.
