Malta’s men’s national golf team have been crowned champions of the 2026 European Team Shield Championships after defeating Turkey 2-1 in a closely contested final.

The Maltese team produced an excellent performance throughout the decisive encounter, with Ruud Critien, Andrew Borg, Oliver Davis and JJ Micallef Verlest delivering strong and accurate performances to secure victory. The final was highly competitive, with both teams producing quality golf, but Malta managed to edge the contest and claim the prestigious title.

Turkey provided a strong challenge, with the final ultimately decided by the narrowest of margins. However, the Maltese players held their nerve when it mattered most to complete a memorable tournament and bring the European Team Shield title home.

Malta’s women’s national team also reached the final, where they faced Turkey in another closely fought contest. Represented by Eliana Buhagiar, Laya Cristina, Serena Falzon Sant Manduca and Filippa Schulze Doering, the Maltese team were narrowly defeated 2-1.

Despite missing out on the gold medal, the women’s team enjoyed an excellent tournament, finishing as runners-up and securing a well-deserved silver medal.

The championships concluded with a closing ceremony held yesterday evening, marking the end of a historic tournament that was hosted in Malta for the first time.

During the ceremony, the winning teams were presented with their medals and shields. Malta Golf Association President William Beck described hosting the championships in Malta as the fulfilment of a long-held dream and expressed his gratitude to everyone who contributed to the success of the event, particularly SportMalta and the Royal Malta Golf Club.

Representatives from the European Golf Association also praised Malta for its excellent organisation and the successful hosting of the championships.

With the men’s team securing gold and the women’s team claiming silver, Malta enjoyed a memorable showing on home soil, making the 2026 European Team Shield Championships a tournament to remember.
