Malta has celebrated a landmark achievement at the European Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) Championships, held from 26 to 29 June in Portugal. Competing against the continent’s top athletes, the Maltese team delivered outstanding performances across a range of events including the 100-metre sprint, the 4-kilometre short course, the 15-kilometre standard course, and the 8-kilometre team relay.

For the first time in Maltese OCR history, five athletes – Daniel Vella, Sarah Farrugia, Sean Porter, Gabriel Borg, and Faith Buttigieg – advanced to the quarterfinals, a remarkable accomplishment that highlights Malta’s rising profile in international competition.

Gabriel Borg set a new men’s national record in the 100-metre sprint with a time of 33.953 seconds, earning the title of Junior National Champion. Sean Porter claimed the U16 boys’ title with 34.425 seconds, while Sarah Farrugia broke the U16 girls’ national record and was named Youth National Champion after finishing in 51.235 seconds.

The Maltese delegation featured a talented mix of junior and senior athletes, guided by Julian Briffa and Ivan Gauci. Their leadership helped ensure a strong team performance marked by dedication and discipline throughout the championship.

This historic success not only marks a turning point for Maltese OCR but also sets the stage for the upcoming World Championships in Sweden, where the team aims to further showcase Malta’s strength on the global stage.
