Malta's national rugby team made an impressive start to their Rugby Europe Men's Trophy 2026/27 campaign, securing a convincing 36-17 victory over Denmark on Saturday afternoon.

Playing at the Erritsø Rugby Club in Fredericia, the Maltese side produced an encouraging performance to claim a valuable away victory in their opening fixture of the competition.

The result marks an important achievement for the Rams, who are competing in the Trophy following their promotion from the Rugby Europe Conference.

Under head coach Phil Pretorius, Malta entered the competition determined to demonstrate their ability to compete against stronger European opposition.

Their promotion followed an impressive campaign featuring victories over Andorra, Cyprus and Israel, before overcoming Austria in a decisive promotion play-off.

Saturday's 19-point winning margin against Denmark provides an encouraging indication of Malta's potential at this higher level.

The Rugby Europe Trophy features six nations competing in a single round-robin format, with Germany, Czechia, Sweden and Lithuania also among Malta's opponents.

Attention now turns to Malta's next assignment against Germany, scheduled for November 7 at the Tony Bezzina Stadium in Paola.

The opening victory will undoubtedly boost confidence within the Maltese squad as the Rams look to build momentum and establish themselves in European rugby's second tier.
