The Malta Futsal National Team delivered a series of strong performances last week at the Futsal Week Tournament in Labin, Croatia, under the guidance of new Head Coach Roberto Menichelli. The tournament marked Menichelli’s first international matches in charge, providing the squad with valuable experience ahead of the 2028 FIFA Futsal World Cup European Qualifiers.

Malta opened their campaign with a thrilling 4-4 draw against Türkiye. Goals from Collin Sammut, Maicon Da Silva, Luke Gatt and Giancarlo Sammut highlighted Malta’s attacking intent. Despite taking the match to penalties, Türkiye ultimately prevailed.

The second match saw Malta face a formidable Greenland side. Malta fought hard, with Collin Sammut and Nathan Cope finding the net, but fell 6-2 to their opponents.

Malta concluded the tournament on a high note against Scotland on Sunday, 25 January, producing their best display of the competition with a convincing 5-2 victory. Collin Sammut scored twice, while Giancarlo Sammut, Aiden Buhagiar and Michael Borg also contributed goals, ensuring a morale-boosting finish to the tournament.

Returning home with valuable lessons and confidence, the Malta Futsal National Team now turns their focus to Phase 1 of the European Qualifiers in April 2026, using the tournament as a key preparation step for their World Cup campaign.
