Malta national team head coach Emilio De Leo and goalkeeper Henry Bonello addressed the media today ahead of tomorrow’s European Qualifier for the 2026 World Cup against Finland.

De Leo highlighted the challenge posed by their Nordic opponents. “Finland is a strong team with good physical structure, strong in rhythm, transitions, and counter-attacks,” he said. “Our main objective is to manage the game, control possession, and showcase our technical qualities. They are solid defensively, so we must show personality, read physical duels, and impose our game plan.”

The Italian coach dismissed suggestions that Malta’s last international window was disappointing. “In terms of results, it wasn’t ideal, but progress isn’t measured solely by scores. Matches against San Marino and Lithuania offered positive indications and lessons from our mistakes. Balance is key — in both good and difficult moments,” he added.

De Leo stressed the importance of belief and determination against higher-ranked teams. “We are not victims. We must play until the final whistle with seriousness and commitment. It will be a tough game, but even in challenging fixtures, we can achieve positive outcomes if we give our all.”

Goalkeeper Henry Bonello echoed the message, noting the team’s progress. “The last window showed we are on the right path. We created chances against Bosnia, and with more aggression, we can improve. We are focused on playing well and hopefully securing a positive result.”

Malta will face Finland tomorrow at Helsinki Olympic Stadium, with kick-off at 18:00 CET. The match will be broadcast live on TVM Sport+.
