Malta FA Sets Up New Committee to Strengthen Safeguarding in Grassroots Football

The Malta Football Association has announced the creation of a new Grassroots Sponsorship Committee aimed at reinforcing governance, safeguarding, and responsible sponsorship practices within youth football. The initiative follows public concerns surrounding the assistance scheme that currently helps around 160 children from socially and financially vulnerable families access football nurseries.

During an Executive Committee meeting held at the Centenary Hall, the Malta FA outlined the committee’s mandate: to develop clear guidelines and offer recommendations on sponsorships and children’s exposure in the grassroots sector. The committee will be chaired by Professor Andrew Azzopardi and will include representatives from the Malta FA, the Youth Football Association, the Commissioner for Children, Oasi, Sedqa, Caritas, and other key partners.

The association has pledged internal resources to support the committee’s work, ensuring transparency, accountability, and regular reporting. The goal is to safeguard young players, promote ethical sponsorships, and uphold the integrity of grassroots football.

The Malta FA emphasised that it values constructive public feedback and remains committed to translating concerns into meaningful action. This latest initiative forms part of the association’s broader efforts to strengthen child welfare and foster a positive, inclusive football environment across the country.
