The Malta FA has confirmed that it has once again retained the maximum possible number of FIFA International Match Officials for 2026, maintaining the historic total of 18 officials first achieved last year. This achievement highlights the steady progress and long-term investment being made in the development of Maltese refereeing.

The milestone reflects the success of the association’s five-year refereeing strategy, launched in 2020, which has resulted in a significant rise in both the quantity and quality of international appointments. Maltese officials have increasingly been trusted with high-profile duties, including league phase matches in UEFA club competitions. Last December marked a notable moment, with Malta receiving a record allocation of three UEFA Conference League league-phase fixtures.

A major highlight of this strategic progress was the promotion of Ishmael Barbara to UEFA First Category Match Official, restoring Malta’s presence at this prestigious level after a seven-year absence. His advancement symbolises the collective effort of the refereeing community and the confidence shown by FIFA and UEFA in Malta’s development structures.

Referees Committee Chairman Alan Mario Sant praised the achievement, noting that maintaining the maximum number of FIFA badges and securing top-level appointments demonstrates the strength of Malta’s refereeing framework. He emphasised that these results motivate the sector to continue raising standards.

The 2026 FIFA list includes referees across football, futsal, and beach soccer, while special recognition was given to Trustin Farrugia Cann, Duncan Sultana, and Roberto Vella for their years of service on the FIFA Panel.
