Malta ASA President Releases Statement After Former National Team Head Coach's Comments

The Aquatic Sports Association of Malta (ASA) has defended former National Team Head Coach Milan Cirovic while strongly rejecting what it described as damaging speculation and unfounded allegations surrounding Maltese water polo.
In a statement issued following Cirovic’s comments on MANUP+, ASA President Karl Izzo said the coach received the Association’s full professional support throughout his tenure, despite the considerable external pressure faced by the national team, technical staff and athletes.
The ASA said serious allegations, including suggestions of match manipulation, had caused significant distress and reputational harm, stressing that claims should not be treated as established facts without due process.
The Association also acknowledged Cirovic’s references to internal politics and external influences, saying his comments raise issues that deserve serious institutional consideration. It added that legitimate criticism will be heard and mistakes addressed, but warned against attempts to damage reputations through unfounded allegations or personal agendas.
Particular concern was expressed over the alleged leak to the press of a confidential report prepared by the Malta Gaming Authority at the request of the Malta police. The ASA said it had yet to be informed of any official investigation into the source of the leak.
The matter will be discussed at the forthcoming ASA Executive meeting, where further measures to protect the sport, its members and athletes will be considered.
The Association also highlighted the progress achieved by Malta’s national teams over the past three years, attributing improved international performances to sustained technical programmes, long-term planning, continuity and collective commitment.
The ASA said its priority remains protecting that legacy while continuing to develop Maltese aquatic sport.
