Ħamrun Spartans president Joseph Portelli has seen his €1.3 million bid to buy Italian Serie D club Siena Calcio rejected by the club’s top officials. According to Gazzetta di Siena, the Maltese businessman, acting through his J.P. Portelli Group, had initially offered €1 million before increasing the bid in an attempt to secure full control of the historic Italian side.

Marcel Portelli, CEO of J.P. Portelli Group, confirmed the news to the Times of Malta, stating: “Yes, I confirm that we made a bid for Siena Calcio, but the offer was rejected by the Italian club.”

While Siena’s president, Swedish businessman Jonas Bodin, is reportedly not interested in selling the club outright, sources suggest he would be open to welcoming new partners, leaving the possibility of future negotiations.

Portelli’s interest in the club is driven by a long-term sporting and financial vision, focusing on stabilising finances, strengthening the technical structure, and investing in youth development to help Siena return to higher divisions of Italian football.

Siena Calcio, a club with a turbulent recent history including spells in Serie A and financial bankruptcy in 2014, continues to compete in Serie D, highlighting the challenge ahead for any prospective investor.
