Ħamrun Spartans president Joseph Portelli has confirmed that he has completed the €2 million acquisition of a club competing in Italy’s Eccellenza championship, marking his most ambitious investment yet. Speaking during the club’s Annual General Meeting, Portelli said he would not yet reveal the club’s name, but described it as a team with strong tradition, a large fanbase, and one that was playing in Serie A as recently as 2020.

Portelli said the project will strengthen Ħamrun’s long‑term vision, noting that once the Italian side climbs to Serie C, it will offer Maltese players valuable opportunities to develop abroad. He added that the venture will also help attract higher‑level foreign talent for Ħamrun’s European campaigns.

The president also confirmed that goalkeeper Henry Bonello and winger Joseph Mbong are set to leave the club. Times of Malta reported that the Italian team acquired is Ferrara Calcio Ars et Labor, formerly known as SPAL, who narrowly missed promotion this season after falling in the play‑off semi‑finals.
