Joseph Mbong sets new national record after 63‑game season with Ħamrun Spartans

Joseph Mbong has written a new chapter in Maltese football history after completing an extraordinary 63‑match season with Ħamrun Spartans, setting a new national record for the most appearances by a Maltese player in a single campaign.
The Malta international now on 74 caps featured across six competitions: 34 Malta Premier League matches including the Final Four, 13 European Cup fixtures, 9 national‑team appearances, 3 FA Trophy games, 3 Jubilee Cup outings and the Super Cup. In doing so, he surpassed Teddy Teuma’s previous record of 61 games set in 2022/23 with Union Saint‑Gilloise. Mbong and Teuma remain the only Maltese players to have ever crossed the 60‑game mark in one season, underlining the physical and mental demands required to sustain such consistency.
The updated Top 10 includes notable names such as Michael Mifsud, who appears twice with 55 and 54 games during his Coventry City years, and Henry Bonello, who reached 54 appearances for Ħamrun Spartans this season. Other marathon campaigns from Andre Schembri, Sam Magri, Ilyas Chouaref and Luke Gambin complete the list. Mbong’s achievement cements his status as one of Malta’s most reliable modern professionals a player whose durability, influence and consistency continue to set him apart.
