Malta’s preparations for Monday’s decisive European Waterpolo Championship match against France have been overshadowed by the sudden dismissal of Jake Muscat from the national squad. The ASA confirmed that Muscat was ordered to return home following a series of disciplinary incidents during the team’s stay in Belgrade.

ASA president Karl Izzo stated that the decision was taken collectively by the national team’s technical staff, who felt that Muscat’s continued presence in the camp was no longer in the best interest of the squad. National coach Milan Cirovic instructed the player to pack his bags on Sunday night, effectively ending his participation in the tournament.

The timing of the incident is far from ideal. Malta are preparing for what is arguably their most important group‑stage match, with a victory over France guaranteeing a historic Top 12 finish. Muscat’s departure adds an unwelcome layer of distraction to an already high‑pressure environment.

Muscat has been at the centre of controversy in recent months, including a heated transfer dispute involving Neptunes and San Ġiljan. His latest setback now leaves Malta focused on regrouping quickly as they chase a landmark result.
