Historic Results at European Cross Country Championships

Malta enjoyed a landmark weekend at the European Cross Country Championships in Lagoa, Portugal, as Luke Micallef and Gabriel Farrugia delivered the best-ever national rankings in their respective categories. Their performances marked a significant step forward for Maltese distance running on the continental stage.
In the Senior Men’s 7.5km race, seasoned athlete Luke Micallef produced a superb run to finish 64th overall, placing ahead of competitors from traditionally strong endurance nations such as Portugal, Denmark, Poland, Lithuania, and Turkey. His result further confirms his excellent form following his recent Masters O35 Half‑Marathon National Record. The race itself was won by Spain’s Thierry Ndikumwenayo after a dramatic sprint finish against world 10,000m champion Jimmy Gressier of France.
In the Men’s U23 6km event, rising talent Gabriel Farrugia made Maltese athletics history by securing the highest-ever ranking for Malta in the U23 category. Building on his previous success at U20 level, Farrugia outperformed athletes from Austria, Turkey, Slovenia, Latvia, Bulgaria, and Luxembourg. Ireland’s Nick Griggs claimed the U23 title, becoming the first Irishman to win individual gold in the event.
With nearly 650 athletes from 36 federations competing, these breakthrough results highlight the progress driven by Athletics Malta and the Maltese Olympic Committee, offering renewed optimism for the future of Maltese distance running.
