Controversial Penalty Ends Ħamrun Spartans' European Dream

Ħamrun Spartans were left devastated after a controversial last-minute penalty saw them eliminated from European competition by Faroese side NSÍ Runavík.
The decisive moment came after NSÍ's Tobias Hestad chased the ball to the byline and attempted a cross. Television replays appeared to show the ball had already crossed the goal line before the delivery, with some angles suggesting the attacker himself knew it had gone out.
Believing a goal kick had been awarded, Ħamrun defender Emerson Marcelina picked up the ball before the referee had signalled for the restart. Instead, the referee awarded NSÍ a penalty for handball, a decision that sparked outrage from the Maltese champions.
Peter Knudsen converted from the spot to send NSÍ through, while a heartbroken Marcelina was left in tears and asked to be substituted, receiving a standing ovation from the Ħamrun supporters.
At full-time, furious Ħamrun players confronted the match officials as supporters branded the decision a "robbery." With tensions running high, police escorted the refereeing team from the pitch following the dramatic conclusion.
