Malta suffered a heartbreaking 20-18 defeat against Greece on Saturday night, leaving their hopes of finishing top of Group C in the 2026 European Rugby League Championship hanging in the balance.

The Knights started strongly after a slow opening, with Stompers hooker Xavier Mamo scoring Malta’s first try following Sam Stratis’ opener for Greece. Veteran halfback Jarrod Sammut maintained his perfect record from the kicking tee, converting all three of Malta’s tries.

However, Eddie Markopoulos intercepted a pass and raced 90 metres to give Greece the advantage heading into half-time.

Malta came out with renewed energy after the break, but Greece capitalised on their possession to extend their lead. Fullback Tyrone Tsagalias crossed for a try before Markopoulos completed his double in the 62nd minute, giving the visitors an eight-point cushion.

The Knights suffered another setback when Mark Robertson was forced off with a bicep injury, before William Watts was sin-binned for a professional foul.

Despite the challenges, Malta refused to surrender. Josh Gatt powered over for his second try of the night in the 79th minute, with Sammut’s conversion bringing the hosts within two points. However, time ran out as Greece held on for victory.

Caretaker head coach Kaine Dimech praised his players’ efforts, highlighting the performances of Jon Jon Micallef, Joe Briggs, Robertson, Zarrin Galea and Gatt.

Malta must now wait for Germany’s clash against Greece in Chania next weekend. A Greek victory would see Germany relegated, while the result will determine the final Group C standings.
