Gold for Malta as 19-Year Old Matthew Mifsud Makes History

Malta is celebrating a landmark sporting moment after 19-year-old Matthew Mifsud secured gold in the squat at the Junior European Championships, becoming the first Maltese male athlete to win an international powerlifting title.
Competing at a bodyweight of 72.5kg, Mifsud produced an extraordinary 260kg squat, earning Malta’s first-ever men’s gold in powerlifting and cementing his status as the nation’s top-ranked male powerlifter.
The young athlete has also become the first Maltese male lifter to surpass 100 GL points, a remarkable milestone in the sport.
The European Sub-Junior, Junior & SOI Classic Powerlifting Championships, held in Druskininkai, Lithuania between 28 November and 7 December, brought together 481 athletes from 36 countries, all vying for top continental honours.
Amid this elite field, Mifsud’s performance stood out as a defining achievement for Malta.
