Goalkeeper Jonathan Debono announces retirement after 23-year senior career

Mgarr goalkeeper Jonathan Debono announced his retirement from football after a decorated 23-year senior career.

Debono shared that "last weekend was the last time I stepped onto the green, my beloved football pitch," marking the 4-2 loss against Zurrieq as his last ever.

He expressed that "it’s been a 23-year journey in senior football — filled with unforgettable memories, challenges, and 422 official matches. A lifetime of moments I will always carry with me," highlighting the emotional journey the veteran goalkeeper underwent throughout his career.

Throughout his career, Jonathan Debono played for multiple clubs, including Floriana, Mosta, Hibernians, Balzan, Sirens, Gudja, and Hamrun Spartans, with whom he clinched the Premier League title during the 2020/2021 season. He was also voted Malta's best Premier League goalkeeper at the age of 37, wrapping up a very successful career.

He also shared a message to aspiring football players, remarking that they should "keep believing and always be ready to learn. If you have a dream, work for it every single day," pushing young players to never give up in pursuit of their goals and the targets they would like to reach.
