GINA MCNAMARA AND JARED MICALLEF NAMED ATHLETICS MALTA ATHLETES OF THE YEAR

Athletics Malta honoured its top performers during the traditional end-of-year awards ceremony, with Gina McNamara and Jared Micallef crowned Athletes of the Year for their outstanding achievements.
Micallef enjoyed a stellar season, highlighted by his participation in the World Championships in Tokyo as Malta’s sole representative. There, he clocked 1:46.62 in the 800m, securing qualification for the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Earlier, he set a new national record of 1:46.08 at the Australian Championships and claimed four silver medals at the Games of the Small States of Europe in the 800m, 1500m, and both 4x400m relays.
McNamara also shone internationally, breaking the national 1500m record with 4:12.28 in Montreal. She contributed to Malta’s fifth-place finish at the European Team Championships with wins in the 800m, 1500m, and mixed relay, and capped her season with a double victory at the National Championships.
The event also recognised promising young athletes and Masters competitors, including Antonella and Rachid Chouhal. Athletics Malta President Mario Bonello praised the exceptional year for Maltese athletics and pledged continued investment in structures and opportunities to build on this momentum.
