From Cancer Survivor to Promising Athlete: The Journey of Nicole Balzan

Nicole Balzan, a former stage‑4 cancer patient, is now emerging as a determined young athlete, marking a remarkable transformation from her early childhood battle. Balzan was only two years old when she was diagnosed with an aggressive kidney cancer, requiring intensive chemotherapy, radiation treatment, and surgery. She spent a year at the Rainbow Ward, where medical staff and the Puttinu Cares team provided continuous support to her and her family.
Now 14, Balzan has turned her focus toward athletics, finding strength and motivation through sprinting. The sport, she says, serves as a daily reminder of her resilience and the progress she has made since her diagnosis. Her interest in sports developed as her health improved, and she has since embraced training with determination.
Balzan’s family continues to express gratitude for the assistance received from Puttinu Cares during her treatment. This Good Friday, she will be contributing to the organisation’s annual marathon by assisting with call‑handling. Funds raised will support the development of new accommodation in central London for Maltese patients undergoing treatment abroad.
