Free Athletics Sessions For Cottonera Children This Summer

Children living in the Cottonera area will once again have the opportunity to attend free athletics training sessions during the coming summer at De La Salle College, offering young participants a structured and engaging introduction to sport. The sessions will focus on running, jumping and other athletic disciplines, with the aim of helping children develop their abilities while building confidence and discipline.
The initiative was announced by Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli during the signing of an agreement between the Kottonera Foundation, represented by Chairperson Joe Mizzi, and the La Salle Athletics Club, represented by Tara Abdilla. The collaboration reflects a shared commitment to providing meaningful opportunities for young people within the community.
Ms Zerafa Civelli noted that the Kottonera Foundation continues to strengthen its role within the daily life of the towns of Cospicua, Vittoriosa, Senglea and Kalkara. She explained that the Foundation works closely with local councils, complementing their efforts through initiatives that enhance community wellbeing. She welcomed the renewed focus on physical activity for children, stressing the importance of introducing healthy habits and sporting values from an early age.

She added that such programmes contribute to a broader vision in which local councils and organisations work together to deliver a more coordinated and inclusive approach to community development. The Parliamentary Secretary also underlined that this initiative reflects the Government’s continued commitment to promoting sport and encouraging active lifestyles among younger generations.
Chairperson Joe Mizzi highlighted that the athletics sessions form part of a wider programme of cultural, social and sporting initiatives organised by the Foundation. He explained that the aim is to ensure that residents of the Cottonera area have access to high quality activities within their own communities. He emphasised that this particular initiative places a strong focus on children, giving them the chance to explore athletics in a supportive and structured environment.
Tara Abdilla, representing the La Salle Athletics Club, expressed satisfaction with the partnership, noting that it allows the club to give back to the community in which it operates. She described the initiative as a positive step towards fostering greater participation in sport at grassroots level.
The sessions will be held throughout July and August, every Tuesday and Friday between 18:30 and 20:00 at De La Salle College. They will be open to students attending primary schools in Cospicua, Senglea, Vittoriosa and Kalkara, ensuring broad access for children across the Cottonera area.
