Former Malta referee Antonio P. Briguglio, widely regarded as one of the country’s most respected match officials, has died at the age of 91. Briguglio began his refereeing career in 1961 and quickly rose to prominence, establishing himself as one of Malta’s leading officials.

His reputation for fairness, professionalism and a strong command of the game earned him a place on the FIFA and UEFA panels, where he served for 16 years and officiated matches at top European and international levels. After stepping away from active refereeing, Briguglio remained involved in the sport as a UEFA Referees’ Observer, mentoring and evaluating match officials across Europe.

In recognition of his lifelong contribution to Maltese sport, Briguglio was awarded the Midalja għall‑Qadi tar‑Repubblika in 2022. His influence on refereeing, both locally and abroad, leaves a lasting legacy.
