Floriana FC Raises Concerns After Four Power Outages Disrupt European Fixture

Floriana Football Club has expressed its disappointment after four separate power outages interrupted its UEFA Conference League match against FC Drita at the Centenary Stadium on Tuesday evening.

In an official statement issued on 22 July 2026, the club argued that the repeated stoppages materially affected the conditions under which the fixture was played. Floriana noted that European qualifying matches are often decided by narrow margins and stressed that clubs should be able to compete in conditions that safeguard the sporting integrity of the competition.

According to the club, each outage broke the continuity of the match and forced the players to stop for extended periods before restarting play. Floriana maintained that these interruptions repeatedly disrupted momentum and created additional opportunities for rest, recovery and tactical discussions that would not normally arise during a UEFA qualifying fixture.

The club also acknowledged the difficult circumstances faced by the match officials, who were required to suspend and restart play on four separate occasions while ensuring that the match could continue safely and in accordance with UEFA regulations.

Floriana highlighted the considerable sporting and financial importance of European qualification, stating that months of preparation had gone into the fixture. It described it as disappointing that circumstances unrelated to football had such a noticeable impact on the conditions in which the match was contested.

The club confirmed that it will engage with the relevant authorities to ensure that the impact of the incidents is properly recognised and appropriately addressed.

Floriana concluded by thanking its players, coaching staff and supporters for the professionalism and resilience they demonstrated throughout what it described as a highly challenging evening.
