First-Ever Aquaman VisitMalta Open Water Swimming Event Brings Open-Water Swimmers From 16 Countries To Marsalforn, Gozo

The inaugural Aquaman VisitMalta open-water swimming event brought together swimmers from 16 countries in Marsalforn Bay, Gozo, on August 29–30, 2026, marking the debut of an event organizers hope will become a regular fixture on the international open-water calendar.

Organized by Otters A.S.C. in partnership with the Aquatic Sports Association of Malta (ASA Malta), the event featured seven race formats, ranging from a 500-metre swim for young and first-time competitors to a challenging 5km open-sea race. Other events included a 1km fin swim and a 3x500m team relay, attracting both recreational swimmers and experienced marathon athletes.

Competitors raced in the clear, sheltered waters of Marsalforn Bay, with late-summer sea temperatures of around 26°C providing ideal conditions. Organizers highlighted Gozo’s natural advantages as an emerging destination for open-water swimming, while aiming to promote sports tourism and healthier, more active lifestyles across Malta and Gozo.

Safety was a key priority, with swimmers monitored throughout their races by an on-water safety team, supported by medical services and aid stations. Timing chips also provided every finisher with an official result.

Supported by Visit Malta, Grand Hotel and local partners including BMIT, MeDirect, Meerendal and Nivea, the event has already set its sights on 2027. With 68 swimmers qualifying for the World Championship in Somabay, Egypt, this October, Aquaman Open Water Malta has made a strong start—and organizers promise that something new is already being planned for next year.
