February 2025: A Proud Month for Maltese Sport on the World Stage

February 2025 proved to be a highly encouraging month for Maltese sport on the international stage, with athletes and teams across several disciplines delivering performances that underlined the island’s growing sporting credibility.
The headline achievement came in snooker, where Brian Cini reached the final of the World Snooker Federation Championship in Morocco. Facing elite amateur players from across the globe, Cini’s run to the final represented one of the most significant international achievements ever recorded by a Maltese cueist. Although he narrowly missed out on the world title, his performance elevated Malta’s profile in a traditionally competitive sport.
In cricket, Malta continued to consolidate its position in international competition by taking part in officially sanctioned T20 International and European Cricket International (ECI) matches. These fixtures, played against fellow European nations, provided valuable exposure, ranking points and experience, reinforcing the national team’s steady progress within the ICC associate structure.
Malta also enjoyed international recognition in weightlifting, with young standout Tenishia Thornton receiving the European Atlas Youth Athlete of the Year Award. The honour reflected her impressive performances at continental level and highlighted Malta’s emergence as a nation capable of producing elite young athletes in strength sports.
In athletics, February served as an important stepping stone toward international competition. Strong performances at national winter meetings and championships allowed several Maltese athletes to achieve qualifying standards and rankings, setting the foundation for later European and global appearances during the 2025 season. These results confirmed the continued upward trend of Maltese track and field on the wider sporting map.
