Falzon of Estoril Praia Says Maltese Football Needs Urgent Overhaul

Edward Falzon, a 36‑year‑old former Maltese footballer now serving as a Strength & Conditioning Coach at G.D. Estoril Praia in Portugal’s top division, has delivered a blunt assessment of the state of Maltese football. With a career centred on exercise‑based rehabilitation, performance training and bridging the gap between recovery and elite performance, Falzon has worked closely with youth and senior players abroad giving him a clear perspective on where Malta is falling short.
Falzon describes the Maltese system as “broken”, arguing that long‑standing structural weaknesses continue to hinder player development. He points to a significant gap in coaching standards at youth level, noting that young Maltese players are rarely taught the tactical intelligence, decision‑making and professional habits required to progress into senior football. By contrast, foreign academies prioritise game‑realistic training and problem‑solving, producing more complete and adaptable athletes.
He also challenges the belief that foreign players are the main barrier to local talent. While their numbers may be high, Falzon insists the real issue is Malta’s failure to develop players capable of competing for those positions. Clubs, he argues, remain too focused on short‑term results, often overlooking young prospects.
Falzon believes meaningful reform better coach education, stronger youth structures and a long‑term vision is essential if Maltese football is to reverse its decline.
