Maltese ultra-endurance athlete Fabio Spiteri is preparing for his third Deca UltraTriathlon, widely regarded as one of the most grueling endurance challenges in the world.

This feat forms part of Project 100, Spiteri’s initiative to raise €100,000 for animal shelters across Malta and Gozo.

The funds will go towards essential food and medical supplies for shelters in need, with Spiteri now just €25,000 away from reaching his goal.

The Deca UltraTriathlon requires competitors to complete a total of 2,260 kilometres, the equivalent of ten consecutive long-distance triathlons.

Participants must swim 38 kilometres, cycle 1,800 kilometres, and run 422 kilometres, the distance of ten marathons, in a single continuous effort.

Earlier this year, Spiteri achieved second place overall at the Bretzel Ultra Triathlon Deca in Colmar, France, breaking his national record over the distance by 31 hours with a total time of 233 hours, 10 minutes and 25 seconds.

Now, he will take on the full distance once again in Taiwan from 9 November, joining around 30 elite athletes in the first Deca UltraTriathlon held in Asia as part of the International Ultra Triathlon Association Grand Prix series.

November offers favourable conditions for racing, with mild temperatures, low rainfall and ideal weather for endurance sport.

Spiteri said, “I hope that the Taiwan Deca will be the final push needed to reach this goal. A huge amount of commitment and sacrifice has gone into these triathlons, and I sincerely hope it encourages people to donate. Every contribution counts.”
