Everything Set For European Team Shield Golf Championships

The 2026 European Team Shield Championships, organised by the European Golf Association (EGA), will officially kick off tomorrow at the Royal Malta Golf Club.

First established in 2015, the prestigious tournament provides emerging golfing nations across Europe with the opportunity to compete at international level while continuing to promote the development of the sport.

This year's edition will feature 18 nations, with a total of 96 players, together with their coaches and delegates, making it one of the largest international golf events ever hosted in Malta.

Malta will be represented in both the men's and women's competitions. The men's team will be captained by Ruud Critien, who will compete alongside Andrew Borg, Oliver Davis and JJ Micallef Verlest, under the guidance of coach Nicholas Zaher and assistant coach Andreas Schwab. The women's team comprises Eliana Buhagiar, Laya Cristina, Serena Falzon Sant Manduca and Filipps Schulze Doering, with Noah Gratil serving as team captain.

The programme begins tomorrow, Tuesday 28 July, with the official opening ceremony scheduled for around 6.00pm. Competition gets underway on Wednesday 29 July with the Individual Stroke Play Round, while the Matchplay rounds will be contested from 30 July to 1 August. The championships will conclude on Saturday with the prize presentation and closing ceremony.

Malta Golf Association President William Beck described the event as a historic moment for Maltese golf, while SportMalta emphasised that Malta's selection as host nation reflects the country's growing reputation for successfully staging major international sporting events.

Beyond its sporting significance, the championships are expected to further strengthen Malta's position as a leading sports tourism destination while providing another boost to the development of golf locally, with the Royal Malta Golf Club and its facilities taking centre stage throughout the event.
