A vibrant sports activity held at Helen Keller School brought together 80 students from San Benedittu Primary Qrendi, San Benedittu College and Special Olympics Malta, showcasing a powerful commitment to inclusion within Maltese education. The event, attended by Dr Lydia Abela, highlighted how collaborative initiatives are helping students of all abilities participate side by side.

Dr Abela, who also serves as President of Special Olympics Malta, described the initiative as a brilliant example of inclusive practice, noting that the partnership between the three schools is the first of its kind. She emphasised that with the support of Special Olympics through equipment, coaching and expertise more schools across Malta and Gozo will be able to adopt similar inclusive sports programmes.

A key focus of the activity was the Motor Activity Training Programme (MATP), which plays a crucial role in enabling students with complex needs to engage actively with their peers. Dr Abela thanked educators and all involved entities for their dedication to building more inclusive school communities.

Helen Keller School is the first in Malta to receive the Unified Champions recognition from Special Olympics. Former President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca was also present for the event.
