December 2025 proved to be a fitting and festive finale to an eventful sporting year in Malta, with success, celebration and community spirit cutting across multiple disciplines.

Football took centre stage early in the month as Valletta FC defeated Sliema Wanderers 3–1 to lift the Jubilee Cup, a trophy staged to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the Malta Football Association. Victory over their historic rivals gave the occasion added weight, as the capital club celebrated a symbolic and emphatic win in a match steeped in tradition. The Jubilee Cup success provided Valletta with a timely morale boost heading into the latter stages of the domestic season.

Recognition of sporting excellence followed on 9 December, when the Maltese Olympic Committee staged its 21st Sports Awards Gala. Athletes, coaches and teams from across a wide range of disciplines were honoured for their achievements, highlighting Malta’s continued progress on the international sporting stage.

December also delivered strong participation across endurance and individual sports. The Valletta Edition Road Race once again transformed the capital’s streets into a challenging and festive course for runners, while the Malta Squash Masters Grand Prix at the Marsa Sports Complex attracted local and overseas competitors, reinforcing Malta’s reputation on the European squash circuit.

Charity and sport went hand in hand as the year drew to a close. Endurance runner Zach Vella captured national attention with his multi-day long-distance challenge in aid of YMCA Malta, while the traditional PolRun on Boxing Day brought runners together in support of L-Istrina.

From silverware marking a historic MFA anniversary to grassroots participation and charitable endeavour, December underlined how Maltese sport continues to thrive through competition, tradition and community spirit.
