Challenge League Matchday 1 Recap: 6 Team Win Their First Match Of 2026/27 Season

Matchday 1 of the BOV Challenge League provided the entertaining matches and goal thrillers which characterizes the Challenge League, with six teams getting their first win of the season on their opening game.

Saturday provided the two most entertaining matches of the weekend. Pietà Hotspurs beat Naxxar Lions 3-2, while newly promoted Attard managed to hold Swieqi to a 3-3 draw in a nail biting six goal thriller which saw Attard scoring what looked to be the winning goal in the 89th minute, only for Swieqi to equalize in the 95th minute to salvage a point. At the Victor Tedesco Stadium, Santa Lucia were also held to a draw by Vittoriosa Stars, while Sirens left it late to beat Żurrieq.

On Sunday, newly promoted Victoria Hotspurs and Melita both cruised to 3-0 victories over St Andrews FC and Gudja, respectively. Fgura United beat Żebbuġ Rangers 4-0, while Tarxien beat Mġarr United 3-1.

The Challenge League returns next weekend, with matches from Friday 18th all through Sunday 20th September at the Centenary and Victor Tedesco Stadiums.
