BOV AND MALTA FA SIGN THREE-YEAR AGREEMENT TO COMBAT FINANCIAL CRIME IN FOOTBALL

Bank of Valletta and the Malta Football Association have signed a three-year Memorandum of Understanding aimed at strengthening resilience against financial crime within the sport of football.
The agreement was signed by BOV CEO Kenneth Farrugia and Malta FA President Bjorn Vassallo, alongside senior officials from both entities. The partnership will focus on collaborative initiatives centred on information sharing, education, and risk awareness to mitigate financial crime risks in the football sector.
Through this MoU, both organisations will work on joint campaigns highlighting scams and promoting good governance, while also facilitating secure exchanges of information related to financial crime typologies. The agreement also seeks to strengthen investigative capabilities through shared expertise and training, as well as enhance customer protection mechanisms.
Speaking at the signing, Farrugia emphasised the importance of embedding strong AML and KYC principles within football clubs to safeguard transparency, integrity, and long-term sustainability. Vassallo described the partnership as strategic, highlighting its role in reinforcing compliance, governance standards, and financial safeguarding across the sport.
This marks BOV’s second anti-financial crime agreement in 2026, following a similar partnership with the Malta Police Force earlier this year.
