Birgu Club to Take Part in Regatta Despite Ongoing Dispute

Birgu’s rowing club has confirmed it will take part in tomorrow morning’s Regatta, despite ongoing tensions with race officials and the organising committee. The decision, the club said, was taken after extensive discussions with members and supporters, and out of respect for the city, volunteers and athletes who have spent months preparing for the event.
In a strongly worded statement, the club reiterated its lack of confidence in Chief Judge Dr Jean Paul Sammut and in Kevin Borg, chairman of the government‑appointed organising committee. The dispute stems from the controversial disqualification of one of Birgu’s medal‑winning boats, a decision the club maintains remains unexplained.
The committee also expressed disappointment in Association President Franco Scicluna, accusing him along with Sammut and Borg of reporting the club to AIMS after it voiced concerns about the incident. The club described the move as disrespectful to volunteers who work tirelessly for the community.
