When Ħamrun Spartans clinched qualification for the group (league) phase of UEFA Europa Conference League in August 2025, it marked a landmark moment not just for the club, but for Maltese football as a whole. They became the first Maltese club ever to reach the league phase of a major European men’s club competition.

The historic breakthrough came after a tense second-leg against Latvian side RFS, held on 28 August 2025. After a 2–2 draw away in Riga, Ħamrun sealed a 3–2 aggregate victory a night of unbridled joy and jubilation for players, coaches and fans alike.

This success also delivered a significant financial boost: qualification alone earned the club more than €3.8 million, a windfall that promises a major uplift not just for Ħamrun but for the wider Maltese football landscape.

Shortly after the draw, Ħamrun found themselves grouped with formidable opponents including Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine), Lincoln Red Imps (Gibraltar), Samsunspor (Turkey), Lausanne‑Sport (Switzerland), Jagiellonia Białystok (Poland), and Shamrock Rovers (Ireland).

After a couple of narrow 1–0 defeats, Ħamrun finally made history again on 27th November 2025 by securing their first ever victory in a UEFA group match a thrilling 3–1 comeback win over Lincoln Red Imps.

In that match, after conceding first, Spartans showed tremendous character: down to ten men after a red card to the opponent, they struck back through substitutes and sealed a result that lifts their hopes of reaching the knockout/play-off phase.
