Bernard Vassallo Marks 35th Season as Basketball Referee

Bernard Vassallo has marked the beginning of his 35th season as a basketball referee, reaching another significant milestone in a remarkable 44-year association with competitive basketball in Malta.

Vassallo, who began playing official basketball in 1982 before moving into refereeing, was appointed Crew Chief for the Men’s Super Cup Final at the start of the 2026/27 season. He is now approaching his 1,100th game refereed exclusively in Malta’s top men’s division.

However, for the 56-year-old official, the numbers are not the most important part of his latest milestone. Vassallo highlighted the opportunity to work alongside two 21-year-old referees who are progressing through Malta’s referee development pathway.

He stressed the importance of patience, humility, hard work and learning from mistakes as young officials continue to gain experience.

Another referee from the same development programme was also entrusted with the role of Crew Chief for the Women’s Super Cup Final.

Vassallo believes that sharing his experience and helping develop the next generation is now an important part of his role.

His ambition is to see young Maltese referees surpass his achievements and continue strengthening basketball officiating in Malta.
