BALZAN EDGE CLOSER TO PROMOTION AFTER NAIL BITING ENCOUNTER AGAINST BIRZEBBUGIA
The Challenge League’s most anticipated fixture of the weekend between Balzan and Birzebbugia provided a six goal nail biting encounter.
The Centenary Stadium was packed as fans on both sides cheered their teams on to glory. When it all seemed certain that Birzebbugia were going to walk away with the three points, Balzan’s Oluwatobiloba Dimeji Awosanya equalised from a freekick in the 97th minute to edge closer to their long desired promotion.
Birzebbugia opened the score in the 34th minute through Paul Lapira, as Birzebbugia headed into the break leading 1-0. Balzan lost the chance to equalise after missing a penalty, with Birzebbugia capitalising to double the score through Duvan Mosquera Torres at the hour mark.
Samir Arab pulled one back for Balzan four minutes later, after which Paul Lapira scored his second and Birzebbugia’s third, establishing a two goal lead with 25 minutes left to play. Balzan struggled to find their way past Birzebbugia’s defence, until Michael Oliveira found the net in the 83rd minute. In the dying moments of the game, Balzan managed to level the score to break their opponent’s hearts after a drama packed football match which entertained all spectators present.
The final matchday taking place next weekend will be the decisive one as all remains uncertain at the top of the table, with Swieqi, Balzan, and Birzebbugia all fighting for for promotion and also the Challenge League title. Both Swieqi and Balzan sit at the top with 45 points, while Birzebbugia remain in third place with 43 points.
Swieqi take on Fgura United, while Balzan face Melita. Birzebbugia encounter Sirens, in hopes that the top two teams drop points in a matchday that is expected to provide the excitement and entertainment worthy of such an exciting football season.
