Balthasar Triumphs In 2025 Rolex Middle Sea Race

The Mills 72 Balthasar, led by Belgian yachtsman Louis Balcaen, has been confirmed as the overall winner of the 46th Rolex Middle Sea Race.
The Royal Malta Yacht Club announced that no remaining competitors could surpass Balthasar’s IRC corrected time, securing the crew a memorable victory in one of the Mediterranean’s most demanding offshore races.
Crossing the finish line in Marsamxett Harbour under the morning sun, the crew sensed they had delivered an outstanding performance.
Their corrected time proved unbeatable, with Django Deer finishing just five minutes behind. Smaller boats, which initially seemed in contention, were ultimately hindered by light winds near Lampedusa.
Balcaen, a veteran of two round-the-world races, described the win as a dream realised and praised his crew’s teamwork, precision and composure under pressure.
“This race tested everything — the boat, the crew, and our patience,” he said. “It was about staying calm, trusting each other, and keeping the boat moving when others stalled.”
Tactician Bouwe Bekking, competing in his eighth circumnavigation campaign, highlighted the race’s tactical complexity. “The weather kept changing its mind, so we had to make bold decisions,” he explained. “Our move west of Pantelleria to find pressure made the difference.”
