August 2025: Malta’s August 2025 Delivers a Month of High‑Impact Sporting Achievements

August 2025 proved to be one of Malta’s most dynamic sporting months in recent years, with major events across waterpolo, football, weightlifting, and athletics showcasing the islands’ growing sporting ambition and community spirit.
Waterpolo dominated the headlines as Malta hosted the 2025 Women’s European U‑18 Water Polo Championship, held at the Tal‑Qroqq Sports Complex in Gżira from 31 August to 7 September. Nineteen teams competed in a high‑intensity tournament that brought international attention to Malta’s aquatic facilities. Spain claimed the title, but the event itself was a milestone for Maltese sport, reinforcing the country’s reputation as a capable host for major European competitions.
The month also featured the build‑up to the new football season, with Premier League clubs intensifying preparations ahead of the 2025–26 campaign. Pre‑season friendlies, youth tournaments, and community events drew strong crowds as supporters geared up for another competitive year. Valletta, Ħamrun Spartans, and other top clubs used August to refine squads and integrate new talent, creating a sense of anticipation across the islands.
Weightlifting delivered one of the standout performances of the month, as the Malta Weightlifting Association Annual Team Event on 9 August saw Tenishia Thornton break national junior and senior records with a flawless six‑lift performance. The event highlighted the rapid growth of the sport and the strength of Malta’s youth development pipeline.
Athletics and community sports rounded out the month, with open‑air races, youth training camps, and fitness events contributing to a vibrant summer atmosphere. Meanwhile, Gozo prepared for the upcoming Otters Fest 2025, featuring waterpolo and swimming activities beginning 31 August.
August 2025 ultimately showcased Malta’s sporting diversity — from elite international tournaments to grassroots participation — reflecting a nation where sport continues to thrive.
