Athletics Malta Endorses Budget Decision To Grant Elite Athletes Up To Ten Days Of Paid Leave

Athletics Malta has welcomed the government’s decision to grant elite athletes and accompanying technical and medical staff with up to ten days of sports leave when representing Malta at major international competitions.
The measure recognises the commitment required to balance professional responsibilities with international competition. It complements ongoing efforts by Athletics Malta to secure investment, improve infrastructure and create opportunities for local athletes, in collaboration with the Ministry for Education and Sport and SportMalta.
The Association has also strengthened its international presence through participation in regional and European meetings. Treasurer Stefania Cilia Caligari attended the Congress for the Balkan Countries and their extended members, where the 2027 competition calendar and host countries were approved.
Meanwhile, President Mario Bonello attended the European Athletics Annual Convention, which addressed priorities including mass participation, digitalisation, risk management and good governance. He also joined the Small European States meeting, reviewing the 2026 season and proposed Challenger Cup reforms. Malta’s second-place finish among 15 nations in the 2026 competition was highlighted as a significant achievement.
European Athletics President Dobromir Karamarinov acknowledged Athletics Malta’s efforts to develop the sport locally. A major European Athletics conference has also been approved for Malta, with further details to follow.
As Athletics Malta prepares to celebrate its centenary in 2028, the Association aims to host more international competitions once ongoing infrastructure projects are completed.
Bonello said sports leave and continued investment in facilities would help strengthen Maltese athletics, build on international achievements and inspire future generations.
