ASA welcomes World & European Aquatics report clearing Maltese players of match‑fixing claims

The Aquatic Sports Association of Malta (ASA) has expressed satisfaction following the publication of a joint World Aquatics and European Aquatics report confirming that Maltese water polo players did not engage in match fixing or any form of competition manipulation. The detailed investigation, conducted by the Aquatics Integrity Unit (AQIU) in collaboration with ASA, AIMS, the Malta Gaming Authority and international Olympic integrity bodies, concluded that none of the eleven players and one staff member placed bets on matches in which they were involved.

The report fully vindicates the ASA’s long‑held position that no illegality occurred. The only violation identified was a breach of World Aquatics ethics rules, which prohibit athletes from betting on any aquatics discipline worldwide. Due to their lack of awareness of this regulation, each player received a one‑month suspension from all aquatic activity.

Beyond the sanctions, the individuals will participate in educational programmes over the next five years aimed at strengthening integrity awareness across the sport. European Aquatics praised the Maltese authorities for their transparency and cooperation, emphasising the shared commitment to safeguarding aquatics through prevention, education and strong governance.
