ASA Unveils Ambitious Plans for Maltese Water Polo

The Aquatic Sports Association of Malta (ASA) has announced an ambitious programme aimed at strengthening Maltese water polo, developing emerging talent and enhancing the national team's competitiveness on the international stage.
Addressing a press conference on Saturday, ASA President Karl Izzo outlined several key initiatives, including the forthcoming Enemed Cup 2026/2027, Malta's international commitments for 2027 and the appointment of Sergey Markotch as Men's National Team Head Coach and Technical Director.
A two-time Olympic bronze medallist, Markotch brings extensive international experience and an impressive coaching record to his new role.
Already a familiar figure in Maltese water polo, he previously guided Neptunes to five consecutive national championship titles, establishing himself among the country's most successful coaches.
Izzo described the appointment as a significant investment in technical expertise, improved national team preparation and the establishment of a sustainable development structure.
“Sergey’s appointment is not simply about preparing a national team for its next international competition. It represents an investment in knowledge, experience and technical excellence,” Izzo stated.
The ASA President stressed that the association's wider strategy focuses on creating greater opportunities for players and clubs while establishing a clear pathway for future generations.
The initiatives underline ASA's determination to raise standards and secure Malta's long-term progress in international water polo.
