ASA Malta Appoints Dimitris Athymaritis as New Swimming Technical Director

The Aquatic Sports Association of Malta has appointed Dimitris Athymaritis as its new Swimming Technical Director, effective 1 September 2026, on an initial three‑year term. Athymaritis will oversee the creation and implementation of a unified National Swimming Program, guiding development from Learn‑to‑Swim through to Elite level. He will also serve as National Swimming Coach at international competitions, managing swimmer selection, preparation and performance planning within both the Elite and Junior Development Progression Programme.

Athymaritis arrives with more than 30 years of coaching experience in Greece, having worked with leading clubs such as Ethnikos Piraeus, N.O. Patron, A.N.O. Argyroupolis and Ilyssiakos. Since 2015, he has served as National Federation Coach for Greece’s Elite Swimmers Development Programme, with athletes under his guidance competing at European Championships, World Championships, the Mediterranean Games and four consecutive Olympic Games. He also contributed to the Athens 2004 Olympics as Competition Area Supervisor.

Holding a distinguished degree in Physical Education and Sport Science from TEFAA Athens and further studies at Stanford University Medicine, Athymaritis is a member of WSCA, ASCA and ASCTA, and has lectured extensively on coach education.

ASA President Karl Izzo welcomed the appointment, noting Athymaritis’s proven international pedigree and his ability to elevate Malta’s swimming structures. ASA Malta anticipates close collaboration with club coaches as it advances a unified, data‑driven approach to swimmer development.
