ASA Launches Integrity Probe After Accessing MGA Betting Report

The Aquatic Sports Association of Malta (ASA) has confirmed it has opened an investigation into potential integrity breaches involving several national water polo players. The announcement follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA), which has granted the ASA full access to the Authority’s report on the matter.
The inquiry is being led by the ASA’s newly appointed Integrity Officer, who in recent weeks established direct cooperation channels with the MGA. The ASA emphasised that the investigation is being conducted with full operational independence, in line with good governance principles, and separately from both the Authority for Integrity in Maltese Sport (AIMS) and the ASA administration. Coordination is also ongoing with European Aquatics and World Aquatics.
According to the ASA, preliminary findings do not indicate match‑fixing or deliberate attempts to influence competition outcomes. However, some betting activity involving certain individuals has been identified and is being examined further.
The Association reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the fairness and credibility of aquatic sport, stressing that any conduct undermining integrity will be addressed seriously. Further updates will be issued as required, with no additional comments to be made while the investigation remains ongoing.
