The Aquatic Sports Association of Malta (ASA) has issued an official statement in response to allegations of match-fixing involving the Maltese water polo national team at the ongoing European Championships.

ASA President Karl Izzo confirmed that the association has not received any official report, complaint, or formal notification regarding the allegations, which were first reported by the Times of Malta. He stressed that the ASA remains firmly committed to the principles of integrity, transparency, and fair play, which underpin sport at every level.

While acknowledging that any allegation of this nature is taken seriously, Izzo underlined that claims remain allegations unless they are proven through due process by the appropriate authorities. He expressed hope that the accusations are unfounded, warning that any confirmation of wrongdoing would be deeply disappointing and would unfairly undermine the significant progress and investment made in recent years by the association, its officials, athletes, coaches, and volunteers.

The ASA reiterated its full willingness to cooperate openly with both national and international authorities should a formal investigation be launched or assistance requested. The association also confirmed it would take all necessary measures within its remit to protect the integrity of the sport and ensure accountability if required.

In the meantime, the ASA called for restraint and responsibility in public discussion and reporting, urging respect for due process.
