Ħamrun Spartans became the first Maltese club to qualify for the group stage of a European club competition after securing a 2-2 draw away from home, beating the Latvian champions FK RFS 3-2 on aggregate.
Saliou Thioune fired home from close range, before Riga equalised through a penalty in the 17th minute. Vincenzo Polito reestablished the Spartans’ lead, after which Riga struck late in the 87th minute to keep their qualification hopes alive.
The Spartans held on and secured a historic result for both the club itself and Maltese football, crossing a threshold and achieving a milestone that had long been desired for the Maltese nation.
