Ħamrun Spartans officials have denied reports that club president Joseph Portelli has completed a €2 million acquisition of Italian side Ars et Labor Ferrara Calcio, formerly known as SPAL. TVM Sport reported that club representatives insisted that no deal has been finalised and that they are currently evaluating several proposals while holding discussions with different entities.

Reports published earlier in the day suggested that Portelli had told members during Friday’s Annual General Meeting that he had reached an agreement to buy a club competing in Italy’s Eccellenza championship. According to those reports, Portelli allegedly stated he had paid €2 million for a team that previously played in Serie A, with plans to offer Maltese players opportunities once the club reaches Serie C.

Italian media identified the club as Ferrara Calcio, a newly formed side that replaced SPAL after financial difficulties forced the historic club to cease operations. The restructured team competed in the Eccellenza Emilia‑Romagna, reaching the promotion play‑off semi‑finals before being eliminated by Santegidiese.
