Aims & Children’s Commissioner Urge Earlier Training Times For Young Athletes

A joint statement by the Authority for Integrity in Maltese Sport (AiMS) and the Office of the Commissioner for Children sets out clear recommendations on when school‑age athletes should conclude training on evenings before school days. The guidance emphasises safeguarding, healthy routines, and the need for balance between sport and education.
AiMS and the Commissioner recommend that children under six finish training by 7pm, those under 11 by 8pm, and minors under 16 by 9pm. These limits aim to ensure young athletes get adequate rest, maintain academic focus, and avoid late‑evening schedules that may compromise wellbeing.
Both entities stressed that the measure is not intended to hinder sporting development, but to reinforce an environment where youth sport supports holistic growth. The statement highlights their shared commitment to safeguarding minors and ensuring that sporting excellence never comes at the expense of a child’s best interests.
