A year ago today, Ħamrun Spartans played their first group stage match against Jagiellonia Białystok, narrowly losing 1-0 against the Polish side in Białystok.

The Spartans began brightly, creating a pair of early chances through Saliou Thioune and N’Dri Koffi, both testing the opposition goalkeeper.

Ante Coric then went close with a long-range strike in the 33rd minute, only to be denied once again. A goal for Jagiellonia was later ruled out by VAR following a foul in the build-up.

The first half ended 0-0, with Ħamrun showing compact defensive organisation and sharp attacking intent.

After the restart, the hosts stepped up their tempo and eventually took the lead through Jesús Imaz on the hour mark, who fired in from just inside the box.

Just a minute later, Ħamrun were dealt a major blow when Joseph Mbong was shown a red card after VAR consultation.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Ħamrun continued to push forward. Koffi had a double chance in the 72nd minute, but both efforts were blocked by a resilient Jagiellonia defence.

Goalkeeper Henry Bonello made several crucial saves in the closing stages to keep the Spartans in the match. Meanwhile, Vincenzo Polito nearly levelled with a header from a deep freekick in the final moments, but it flew over the bar.

Ħamrun’s disciplined and determined display, especially after going a man down, earned plaudits despite the defeat, with the club celebrating their one year anniversary from their first ever European group stage appearance.
