Since 2024, the Public Works Department has become an important partner for voluntary sports associations across Malta, carrying out essential projects that have strengthened their facilities and operations.

Over the past year alone, the department has completed 77 projects in collaboration with 21 different sports associations, representing a total investment exceeding €250,000.

Parliamentary Secretary for Public Works Omar Farrugia announced this during a visit to the Lija Athletics F.C. Nursery, where one of the latest projects was completed.

At the Lija nursery, which will host around 200 children in the upcoming season, the department carried out maintenance works on a wall covering an area of 300 square metres.

Farrugia noted that such projects complement the Government’s significant investment in the voluntary and sports sectors in recent years.

He emphasised that each project undertaken by the Public Works Department helps sports associations focus their resources on the services and activities that benefit their members and the wider community.

The Parliamentary Secretary also reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to supporting voluntary organisations as vital socio-economic pillars that contribute to Malta’s social and cultural fabric.

Malcolm Fenech, President of Lija Athletics F.C., praised the initiative, noting that the work had made a visible difference in the nursery’s environment.

“For the children, it is wonderful to be in a clean and organised space, something every nursery values greatly,” he said.

Projects carried out during the year included maintenance, resurfacing of pitches, refurbishment of changing rooms, regeneration of bocci clubs, and heating installations in waterpolo facilities.
