“SpongeBob SquarePants” debuted on May 1, 1999, after creator Stephen Hillenburg’s journey from marine science to animation.
Initially an educational comic featuring “Bob the Sponge,” Hillenburg pitched the idea to Nickelodeon during his time directing “Rocko’s Modern Life.” The show’s preview, “Help Wanted,” aired after Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards, introducing iconic characters like SpongeBob, Patrick, Mr. Krabs, Squidward, and Gary.
Tom Kenny’s unique voice for SpongeBob contributed to its distinctiveness.
The series officially launched on July 17, 1999, surpassing popular shows in viewership. Its success soared with nearly 56 million viewers by 2002, and its first film grossed $141 million globally in 2004.
Hillenburg remained involved in subsequent projects despite stepping down as showrunner after the movie. The franchise expanded with spin-offs, video games, theme park rides, and a Broadway musical.
“SpongeBob SquarePants” remains popular, currently in its 14th season. The franchise’s retail merchandise sales exceeded $13 billion by 2017, showcasing its cultural impact and enduring appeal.
